| Q:
Does the furniture retain its original color? |
A: If not treated, wood furniture
will gradually weather to a silver gray color
over a period of 8 to 18 months depending on
its exposure to the elements. To return the
wood to its original color, it can be pressure
washed to remove the oxidized layer and then
oiled with either Kwila Oil, or commercially
available exotic timber oil. Because our wood
is not a stained product, it will immediately
return to its original color using this process. |
| |
| Q:
Does your furniture bleed? |
| A: New Pacific Kwila furniture
WILL bleed when first exposed to rain or moisture.
This is normal for exotic hardwoods and expected.
During the initial weathering of Pacific Kwila,
a brown/red tanin similar to coffee will "bleed"
from the product. As the nature of each piece
of timer is different, this "bleeding"
period is unpredictable in length. A thorough
hose down of the furniture several times on
a grassy area will assist in flushing the excess
sap away. Once Pacific Kwila has completed the
initial bleeding, the wood will not bleed again.
Oil should be applied after products have thoroughly
dried in order to keep the deep red color of
Pacific Kwila. Otherwise the products will weather
to a silvery gray but the durability of Pacific
Kwila will not be effected. Enjoy your Pacific
Kwila products for the next 25-50 years. |
| |
| Q:
What is the best way to clean and preserve the
furniture? |
| A: Pacific Kwila and Ironwood
requires no maintenance. However, if the original
appearance is to be retained, it will require
coating with a lightweight oil 1-3 times a year
typically. An oil treatment or penetrating stain
and/or sealer can be used. Pacific Kwila and
Ironwood have a life expectancy of 25 –
50 years with no maintenance. The only characteristic
to remember is that the surface oil of
Pacific Kwila will bleed or weep initially
when exposed to moisture and can stain. It is
recommended to place the furniture where it
will not stain anything during this time. Once
the bleeding has finished, usually after an
overnight rain or several days, Pacific Kwila
never bleeds again. A great deal for a product
that will serve you for the rest of your life!
All exposed hardware on the furniture products
is yellow zinc plated and brass fittings are
used in all key areas. |

| Q:
How does Ironwood Timber compare to other furniture
wood? |
A:When compared to other outdoor
furniture products Ironwood Timber is:
- Ironwood timber is simply one of the strongest
timbers in the world.
- Ironwood timber possesses a unique quality
where the timber will change from a pale amber
to a deep reddish brown that enhances the
look of the product. This happens naturally
and is not a result of staining.
- Many other timbers require curing, a process
of continually hosing and drying until the
timber leaches no more sap. Ironwood is completely
cured and ready for use straight away with
no risk of leaching. Ironwood does not bleed
or leach sap.
- Amazing Durability – The Ironwood
timber heartwood resists the attack of fungi
and insects, including termites and marine
borers.
- Ironwood is considerably heavier than Jarrah
and appreciably heavier than American and
European Oak.
- Every piece of Ironwood furniture is hand
finished.
